As with all the films he helmed in the '90s and noughties before his run-ins with the law and bad judgement, Hacksaw Ridge is a heady mix of the sacred and the profane, the intimate and the epic. Supplied Andrew Garfield plays United States Army corporal Desmond Doss in the new film Hacksaw Ridge. But for all that less-than-subtle cinematic magpieing, Hacksaw Ridge is a deeply gripping and engrossing film made with passion, if perhaps a little too much bombast.
