Originally from Dublin, Dr O’Brien completed a double-degree in molecular genetics and zoology at University College Dublin. Joining Prof Griffin was ‘‘a bit of a no-brainer’’ at that point but the intention was never to stay. DRL’s ‘‘bread and butter’’ had been Johne’s disease, testing primarily in the deer industry. It was really just an extension of Prof Griffin and veterinary scientist Colin Mackintosh’s collaborations over the years.
