It has long been thought this mechanism was essential in order to hear anything further away than a few inches. In other words, it was believed that in order for an organism to hear at long range, it needs eardrums. They then exposed the mosquitoes to a range of flight tone frequencies from a loud speaker placed at 1 to 10 meters away. They found that even if the speaker was 10 meters away, the mosquitoes were able to hear it. This range not only includes frequencies of female mosquitoes in flight, but it also correlates to sounds made by human speech, explains Hoy.
