Morocco: King Mohammed VI fires Prime Minister Benkirane

Morocco: King Mohammed VI fires Prime Minister BenkiraneThe North Africa Journal – March 15, 2017 – The Moroccan King, Mohamed VI has reportedly sacked Prime Minister Abdelilah Benkirane and is preparing to appoint a replacement from within Benkirane’s party, the moderate Islamist PJD. The firing of Benkirane is the result of his inability to form a coalition government, that would have included ministers from other parties, as required by Moroccan law. Morocco has been without a functioning executive branch for nearly six months, following the parliamentary elections that saw the PJD win the biggest number of seats in parliament. As per Moroccan law, Mohammed has to appoint another member of PJD to form the cabinet. The next PJD Prime Minister is likely going to be more in line with the politicians who are close to the monarchy, even though Benkirane himself was no so autonomous from the monarchy in his policies.
