Moroccans rally for democracy and better living conditions

Tens of thousands of Moroccans took to the streets of Casablanca on Sunday, 23 February 2020, to renew their demand for democracy, dignity and economic equality. Protesters also carried placard and photos of pro-democracy militants who are currently in prison to demand their release. The date of the march coincided with the anniversary of the 20 February Movement, a protest movement that began in 2011 during the peak of the Arab Spring. The demonstration was organized by the Moroccan Social Front (FSM), a recently created coalition of four left parties, trade union organizations like the Democratic Confederation of Labor (CDT) and associations, such as the AMDH which focuses on human rights. The demonstrators protested forcefully against unemployment, the high cost of living, the failings of public services while demanding “the release of all political detainees”, starting with those of the Moroccan Hirak.
