The Mamata Banerjee government was not taking any chances on the first day of the indefinite agitation called by the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha. Official figures claim that over 93 per cent of the 260-odd employees turned up at the various offices at the District Magistrate's office building, the hub of government facilities in Darjeeling. The Morcha sought immediate intervention by the Centre, which Trinamul interpreted as a sign that the hill party was suing for peace. Some residents wondered whether the structured peace would last and attendance in the offices stay the same down the weeks.
