More women go out to work — or the Jobcentre


The unemployment rate among women surged past the male rate in January for the first time in 38 years, according to the Office for National Statistics. On its own the figure suggests that there is discrimination against women at interview as well as on pay. To understand what’s going on, you need to start with what appear to be contradictory figures. Between November and January the jobless rate for women rose from 4.3 per cent to 4.4 per cent while the male rate fell from 4.3 per cent to 4.2 per cent. However, over the same period the female employment rate rose from 70.8 per cent to 70.9 per cent while the male rate fell from 79.9 per cent…
