More than a quarter of Canadians are subjected to harassment on social media, with some experiencing real-world consequences as a result, a new Angus Reid Institute poll has found. Canadians reported experiencing a wide range of harassment on social media, from insults to personal information posted without their approval to physical threats and sexual harassment. “The impact and the effects are more than theoretical, virtual and digital,” Shachi Kurl, executive director at the Angus Reid Institute, said. The chances of being bullied, according to the survey, only increase with the amount people use social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. The poll is comprised of information collected from a randomized sample of 1,350 Canadians on the Angus Reid Institute forum.
