Our cookbook of the week is Secrets from My Vietnamese Kitchen by award-winning Montreal novelist Kim Thúy. The cookbook started as a personal project, she explains – a means of preserving memories – but soon grew into something more expansive. Born in Saigon, Thúy left Vietnam at age 10 with her parents and brothers during the “boat people” refugee crisis. Some four decades later, despite having arrived in North America “at different moments with different means,” her extended family enjoys togetherness. Thúy ran a restaurant in Montreal – Ru de Nam – before beginning her writing career.
