Comic-Con InternationalNominations for the highest honors in the comics industry are out, with women and monsters front and center. The selection committee has narrowed the field to a shortlist of candidates in two dozen categories, honoring everything from best reality-based work and best ongoing series to best lettering. This year, as in the past couple of years, nominations for work by women is catching up to the growing gender balance within comics fandom and among creators. The ongoing fantasy series Monstress from Image Comics also garnered five nominations with nods for best writer (Marjorie Liu), best interior art - multimedia (for artist Sana Takeda), Best Cover Artist (Takeda), Best Publication for Teens, and Best Continuing Series. One prestigious category to watch is Best Reality-Based Work, a catch-all for the expanding assortment of non-fiction comics.
