Monster typhoon “Ompong” made landfall in Baggao, Cagayan early Saturday morning, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said. Before midnight, Ompong slightly changed course, moving west north-west and posing a serious threat to Cagayan Province. Even if the typhoon weakens slightly after slamming ashore, its winds will remain very destructive, Pagasa forecaster Rene Paciente said. 4 (Winds of 171 – 220 kph is expected in at least 12 hrs), Pagasa said. Though it is likely to weaken from a super typhoon to a severe typhoon, it will still be packing sustained winds of 175 kph (109 mph), it said.
