Monsoon knocking on the doors of Calcutta

The southwest monsoon is expected to reach Calcutta riding the same system over the next 24 hours, the Met office has said. “The southwest monsoon has advanced to south Chhattisgarh and south Odisha and eastern parts of Assam and Meghalaya. It is expected to reach Gangetic Bengal, including Calcutta, over the next 24 hours,” said Mrutyunjaya Mohapatra, the IMD director general in New Delhi. The usual date for the arrival of the monsoon winds in Calcutta is June 8. Apart from widespread rain, the monsoon is marked by wind blowing from southwest, the direction of the Bay of Bengal, instead of from north India.
