Around 400 workers at historic shoe shop chain Russell & Bromley face an uncertain future after a sale to fashion giant Next. While Next has bought the Russell & Bromley name, along with certain other assets, the deal doesn’t include 33 stores and nine concessions across the UK and Ireland. Family-owned Russell & Bromley was founded in Sussex in 1879, and trades on its British roots. However, the retailer has suffered in a cut throat market, with sales falling and losses widening. Andrew Bromley, chief executive of the shoe chain and a family member, said: “Following a strategic review with external advisers, we have taken the difficult decision to sell the Russell & Bromley brand.
