Container traffic through Mombasa, Kenya’s biggest port, increased by 2.4 per cent in 2016 after the opening of a new section of the second container terminal, the management has said. Catherine Mturi-Wairi, the managing director of Kenya Ports Authority, said the facility handled 27.36 million tonnes of cargo between January and December last year, up from 26.73 million tonnes during the same period in 2015. Mturi-Wairi said in a statement that more than six million tonnes were freight moving to and from Uganda, which accounted for 81.9 per cent of all transit traffic.
