Moderna applies for EUA

MANILA, Philippines — American pharmaceutical company Moderna Inc. is seeking emergency use authorization (EUA) from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its COVID-19 vaccine. According to FDA director general Eric Domingo, Moderna filed yesterday its application for EUA, which will allow the company to supply the Philippines with its vaccines for COVID-19. The FDA earlier granted EUA to Pfizer-BioNTech, AstraZeneca, Sinovac’s CoronaVac, Gamaleya’s Sputnik V, Janssen/Johnson & Johnson and Bharat Biotech. Dr. Jaime Montoya, executive director of the DOST-Philippine Council for Health Research and Development, said the EUA already meant that the vaccines were safe and efficacious against COVID-19. “Even with the EUA mechanism in place, it is still crucial to continue the conduct of clinical trials, specially that in cases of serious adverse events, the FDA may immediately revoke the grant (of EUA),” Montoya said.
