Modern India needs Uniform Civil Code, Centre should take necessary steps: Delhi HC

The Delhi High Court on Friday said there is a need for the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) to become reality and the central government should take necessary steps in this direction. The hope expressed in Article 44 of the Constitution that the state shall secure for its citizens Uniform Civil Code "ought not to remain a mere hope", the court said. It provides that "The State shall endeavour to secure for the citizens a uniform civil code throughout the territory of India". It may be noted that Uniform Civil Code has been an issue in the country for a long time. Several courts have said in different decisions that in order to bring uniformity in-laws, efforts should be made to put a Uniform Civil Code in place.
