Mobileye split with Tesla spurs debate on self-driving tech

Like Mobile, both Nvidia and NXP make “systems on chips” or SOCs that can gather and analyse data from a variety of self-driving vehicle sensors. Tesla shares on Tuesday were down 0.8% at $228.14. Bengaluru/Detroit: A widening rift between electric vehicle maker Tesla Motors Inc and Mobileye NV sent shares of the Israeli maker of driving-assistance chips and software plunging on Tuesday and fanned debate on self-driving vehicle technology. Unlike many other manufacturers that are incorporating laser-based lidar sensors into their self-driving systems, Tesla has eschewed lidar, electing instead to focus on cameras, radar and ultrasonic sensors. Mobileye shares, which have been wildly popular with institutional and tech investors, were down 9% to $44.81 in late morning, after the company said its contract with Tesla would not be renewed after it expires.
