Mobil fails to address illegal docking of workers’ pay

Mobil Porchester Road essentially had workers pay to keep their jobs. A South Auckland Mobil station has been ordered to pay $20,000 by the Employment Relations Authority for breaches, likened to the workers having to pay a premium to keep their jobs. Mittal and Son Limited, trading as Mobil Porchester Road, had individual employment agreements that said staff were liable to cover the cost of fuel taken by customers who drove off without paying. This policy was applied in the case of at least two workers, one of whom was under 20. Labour Inspectorate regional manager Callum McMillan said the issue of pay-docking for fuel pump drive-offs has been raised in the past across the industry.
