A medium-sized earthquake could put an estimated 75 earthquake-prone buildings in the central business district at risk of falling, or being significantly damaged. But the Manawatū District Council's plan to safeguard the town's busiest streets has been met with a mixed response. The Government took control of earthquake-prone building regulation in 2016, passing legislation that compels building owners to fix or demolish dangerous structures within set timeframes.
