A medium-sized earthquake could put an estimated 75 earthquake-prone buildings in the central business district at risk of falling, or being significantly damaged. But the Manawatū District Council's plan to safeguard the town's busiest streets has been met with a mixed response. The Government took control of earthquake-prone building regulation in 2016, passing legislation that compels building owners to fix or demolish dangerous structures within set timeframes. The same goes with buildings along large chunks of Kimbolton Rd, Fergusson St, Stafford St, MacArthur St and Manchester St. MDC/SUPPLIED These are the proposed priority thoroughfares for earthquake-prone buildings in Feilding.
