Shayan Syed told a Brampton jury the altercation with Christopher Birrell followed a night of copious drinking and drug use. In the early hours of Feb. 4, 2020, Syed accompanied Birrell from Syed’s basement apartment on Sebastian Drive to a nearby bus stop on Eglinton Avenue West in Mississauga, he testified. Birrell then asked Syed to hand over his own phone, which Syed said he declined to do. “I just reached around and I stabbed him,” he said, using a hugging motion to demonstrate the position his hands were in when he stabbed Birrell. Birrell’s phone was dead at the time, he said.
