The Minneapolis City Council on Friday unanimously approved a proposal to change the city charter to allow the police department to be dismantled, following mass public criticism of law enforcement over the killing of George Floyd. There is no short-term plan to scrap the Minneapolis police department, the city council says. If they don't get the charter change on the November ballot, their next chance won't come until November 2021, they say. The city council would then need to unanimously approve the ordinance. If he vetoes, the city council could override it with a two-thirds vote in favor.
