Ministry urges transparent issuance of taxi licensesUNFAIR FEES: Taxi drivers have reported being forced to pay as much as NT$350,000 by taxi firms to obtain licenses which should be distributed free of chargeBy Shelley Shan / Staff ReporterThe Ministry of Transportation and Communications last week called for greater transparency in local governments’ issuance of taxi licenses, after some drivers complained that they had paid as much as NT$350,000 to obtain them. Department of Public Transportation and Supervision Director-General Hu Ti-chi (胡迪琦) said the ministry received multiple complaints from taxi drivers that they had been improperly charged by taxi firms for taxi license plates. As such, these unassigned taxi licenses are mostly in the hands of taxi companies with sizable taxi fleets, Hu said. “They should conduct detailed evaluations of the proposed extensions of taxi license plates and consider the appropriate number of taxi license plates in the cities and counties,” she said. The draft amendment would also require local highway departments to reveal online standard pricing schemes of obtaining taxi license plates.
