Minister willing to look at firearms for competitions

Police Minister Stuart Nash. Photo: APPolice Minister Stuart Nash says he is willing to look at allowing semi-automatic firearms for shooting competitions when the Government makes further changes to gun laws later this year. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the current regime around firearms licences was not stringent enough, but those matters needed broad public consultation. The bill would ban MSSAs and assault rifles, with some exemptions for hunting, pest-control, collectors’ items, and heirlooms and mementos. But the committee did not support extending exemptions for shooting competitions, or for seven-round cartridges for semi-automatic shotguns.
