KiwiRail open to leasing redundant railway stationDavid White/Stuff Passenger train services at the Waitākere Railway Station were ceased in 2015. The Waitākere railway station has sat idle since, with KiwiRail going as far to install metal gates to stop people from loitering. The Avondale station building became rundown and vandalised by fire and graffiti following its closure in 1986. It was relocated to the Swanson railway station in 1995 and opened as a cafe in 2000. However, the station building has become run down and has occasionally attracted the attention of vandals since the fire brigade moved out.
