The fundamentals of military leadership, i.e the military value system, leadership traits, principles, styles, and code of conduct have remained unchanged since military history began to be recorded in 2,700 BC with the war fought between the states of Sumer and Elam in Mesopotamia. In the hierarchical system of the armed forces, leaders are required at every level to command and lead their subordinates. Military leadership has been slow to respond and needs to master the art of exploiting the information domain. If not checked it is a matter of time before this engulfs the military leadership. Ethical assessment of military leadership and the way forward will be discussed in the next column.
