Canada’s military brass deserves all the blowback it’s getting for excluding the families of soldiers killed in Afghanistan from a ceremony dedicating a memorial to them in Ottawa. It should have been an occasion to honour the 159 soldiers who died during Canada’s long military mission in Afghanistan. Instead, it was all done in secret, without inviting the families or even informing them until it was a fait accompli. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau promises to do “things right.” Yes, by all means do things right. Better yet, get it right the first time and don’t add to the pain of families who have already lost so much.
