Mi'kmaw lobster fishery in Nova Scotia adds 3 boats

An Indigenous-run lobster fishery off the coast of southwestern Nova Scotia is increasing the size of its fleet to 10 boats from seven, creating a total capacity of 500 traps. The Sipekne'katik fishery makes up a small fraction of the commercial lobster licences issued in the fishing area around St. Marys Bay. A fleet of their vessels removed 350 Mi'kmaw lobster traps from the water on the weekend of Sept. 19 to 20. Colin Sproul, president of the Bay of Fundy Inshore Fishermen's Association, said lobster-fishing season in St. Marys Bay doesn't start until the last Monday of November. Meanwhile, Knockwood said the confrontational actions of non-Indigenous harvesters on the waters off St. Marys Bay have ceased.
