MANILA, Philippines — Miguel Tabuena hopes to check what is shaping up to be a trend of strong starts but shaky finishes on the Asian Tour as he shoots for no less than the crown in the 100th New Zealand Open firing off Feb. 28 at The Hills and Millbrook Resort in Queenstown. Tabuena made quite a stir when he co-led in the first round of the star-studded Singapore Open last January but wavered in the next three days and wound up at joint 18th. He stormed to a shared view of the top again in the recent World Super Six Perth but wobbled in the next two rounds and even missed a spot in the knockout stage of the novel tournament in Australia. But heading to the $850,000 NZ Open, the 24-year-old diminutive but talented Filipino feels he has the tools and confidence to finally get a crack at another Asian Tour diadem the way he bested a slew of top players to win the Queen’s Cup in Thailand late last year.
