It was not the finale the scriptwriters might have planned, but Miguel Cotto insisted he would not reverse his decision to retire, despite losing his farewell fight and WBO light-middleweight title to Sadam Ali in the early hours of yesterday. After a 17-year career that saw the Puerto Rican win six world titles in four weight divisions. A big crowd turned up at Madison Square Garden, in New York, to witness one final hurrah, but the 37-year-old champion could not clear the final hurdle. Cotto had been leading on the scorecards when he said he suffered a torn bicep in his left arm in the seventh round. Ali claimed the final four rounds as Cotto faded to take a unanimous points decision.
