Migration plateaus while visitor numbers continue to climbDAVID JAMES/FAIRFAX NZ The North Island had a net migration gain of almost 50,000 for the year ended November, while the South Island gained more than 10,000. Boom times continue for tourism but net migration continues to slow. Visitor numbers hit another record high with 3.71m arrivals for the 12 month period, up 8 per cent on the previous year. Migrants are favouring the North Island which had a net migration gain of 49,178 over the 12 months, with the vast majority going to Auckland, followed by Wellington and Waikato. Record numbers of New Zealanders are also taking overseas trips with 2.9m logged for the year, up 10 per cent.
