Migration numbers getting close to negative territory


Population growth from migration is at a 10 year low, with a net population gain of just 653 people in September. In the year to September there was a net gain of just 796 people, compared to a net gain of 65,014 in the year to September 2020. The record for any 12 month period was a net gain of 92,000 in the year to March 2020. In the 12 months to September this year there was a net gain of 9325 NZ citizens and a net loss on 8529 non-NZ citizens. There was a net loss of 3388 citizens of China in the year to September 2021, followed by a net loss of 1783 citizens of India, and a net loss of 894 citizens of Korea.
