The boy died shortly after midnight today, according to a release from US Customs and Border Protection. It's the second instance this month of an immigrant child dying while being detained by the Border Patrol. The statement says the boy showed signs of illness on Christmas Eve and both were transferred to the Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center. Hospital staff diagnosed the boy with a common cold but when he was evaluated for release they diagnosed a fever. The agency says that the boy was returned to the hospital Monday evening with nausea and vomiting.
