Microsoft tightens Windows 11 driver security rules

Microsoft is set to significantly bolster Windows 11 security by mandating that all hardware drivers meet the Windows Hardware Compatibility Program (WHCP) standards, effectively ending decades of support for legacy drivers that rely on expired certificates. From April 1, 2026, Windows is strictly enforcing WHCP certification, a rigorous quality control protocol that allows Microsoft to directly oversee the security and stability of kernel-level software. The new policy is being integrated into Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H1, as well as Windows Server 2025. Under the new rules, users attempting to install older drivers on fresh systems may face aggressive system blocks or complex manual workarounds. Instead, the company will introduce an "allow list" for vetted legacy drivers that have been verified as safe, ensuring that essential equipment remains functional during the policy shift.
