Microsoft on Monday released a Secure Boot update ahead of the expiry of a root certificate first issued in 2011, warning users to install the patch to avoid potential startup problems when the certificate lapses in mid‑2026. Secure Boot is a security feature that checks software during system startup so only trusted operating systems and signed code can run. The expiring certificate prompted Microsoft to refresh the platform’s root of trust to maintain device integrity and prevent disruption. The update will be delivered through Windows Update and should install automatically for most users as part of routine system updates. Windows 11 users were specifically urged to install the updated Secure Boot certificate.
