Microsoft develops perfect response to fake news . . . a fake reader

The program commented on a story about football as well as a film review ALEX DAVIDSON/GETTY IMAGESA computer program that can post convincing comments under news articles has been developed by researchers. The “DeepCom” system (for “deep commenter”) was detailed in a paper in the online journal arXiv, which described it as useful for encouraging people to stay on websites and share comments of their own. The program, trained on 340,000 news articles and the corresponding reader comments, “simulates how people digest [an] article” and then mimics how people would comment”. The paper described how the program read a football story, then commented: “England above Spain, Portugal and Germany. Interesting”; and read a Chinese film review, commenting on the quality of the acting and mentioning the spouse of one of the actors, who is not mentioned in the story.
