Michelin star restaurant closes its doors to drunken racegoers

The races attract about 250,000 fans but not all are equally well-behaved JAMES CROMBIE/INPHOA Michelin-starred Galway restaurant will close during one of the busiest weeks of the year because of “crazy” levels of drunkenness and bad behaviour during race week. JP McMahon, who co-owns Aniar, said that the decision was taken because of drunken racegoers and a high number of no-shows. The chef, who also co-owns Cava Bodega and Eat, said that it was one of the busiest times of the year but that it was not worth being open. Mr McMahon has said that last year a member of staff had to confront a drunk woman who was leaning against the restaurant window, urinating. “Someone was up against the window pissing outside the restaurant,” he said.
