Mi’kmaw actor Glen Gould on struggle for Indigenous actors to land roles not focused on ethnicity

HALIFAX — After decades in the entertainment business working with big names like Liam Neeson, Mi’kmaw actor Glen Gould still holds onto a superhero goal. The comment is a lighthearted “jab at Adam,” Gould said, referring to fellow Canadian Indigenous actor Adam Beach’s recent turn in Suicide Squad as supervillain Slipknot who dies early in the movie. As an Indigenous actor, Gould said he’s “very careful” about the roles he chooses, and feels more scrutiny and expectation to be a role model. However, Gould said he’s seen a positive change in recent years with more and more Indigenous filmmakers coming onto the scene, as well as specific Indigenous festivals and awards. There’s a lot stories that need to be told … to show the real side of Indigenous people,” Gould said.
