"I regret the cowardly attack in which journalist Santiago Barroso was killed," said Santos Gonzalez, mayor of San Luis Rio Colorado, the town where the journalist lived, in Sonora state which borders the United States. Local media have reported that Mr Barroso was working on stories about drug trafficking in his town. On February 9, a radio journalist was shot dead in Tabasco state, east of Mexico City, after a community radio station director was murdered in the northern state of Baja California Sur early in the year. A vast majority of the murders have gone unpunished, as do more than 90 percent of violent crimes in Mexico.
