Mexico’s economy minister is not afraid of Trump

After months of restrained diplomacy, Mexico is talking tougher with U.S. President Donald Trump, who has blamed its southern neighbour for everything from illegal immigrants to unfair trade. While Trump has threatened to scrap the North American Free Trade Agreement, Economy Minister Ildefonso Guajardo told the Star a trade renegotiation cannot be one-sided. Guajardo spoke to the Star during a recent visit to Toronto for a panel conversation on NAFTA with Chrystia Freeland, Canada’s foreign minister, as well as her Mexican counterpart. As with any negotiation, the idea is to find ways to accommodate our interests and concerns, and co-operate accordingly. You cannot negotiate expecting that only your concerns will be addressed without giving consideration to the other parties’ interests.
