Wiedefeld announced that Metro Transit Police are opening a parallel investigation into the July 29 incident, in which a train derailed outside of East Falls Church station — a move that suggests that some kind of criminal wrongdoing from maintenance workers or inspectors could have contributed to the derailment. “The administrative review uncovered information that warrants further investigation by Metro Transit Police,” Wiedefeld said in a statement.
