Metro adds work to next SafeTrack project

[FTA blasts Metro track maintenance]In a preliminary finding, Metro investigators said the tracks at the derailment site were too wide to support the train because the wooden rail ties that secure them had deteriorated. Metro has this set up so that trains should arrive at the Shady Grove and Rockville platforms every 18 minutes. The work scheduled to begin Tuesday between Shady Grove and Twinbrook includes refurbishing or replacing crossties, rail fasteners, rails, switches and power cables. The closing will clear the tracks so that crews can replace crossties and perform additional repairs, including work on switches, Metro said in a statement. The Shady Grove, Rockville, Twinbrook and White Flint stations will be closed.
