Along with Met Eireann in Ireland and KNMI, the Dutch weather service, meteorologists name storms so that the communication of severe weather is easier. This weekend, we have a newly christened storm arriving, Storm Bert. Heavy snowfall could bring further disruption to parts of the country while heavy rain is also likely, especially in western parts, the Met Office added. While Mavis is named after Mavis Hinds, who worked on the earliest Met Office computers.
