President Donald Trump's xenophobic tweets "go against what makes America great", German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Friday, as she voiced solidarity with four minority Democratic congresswomen attacked by the US leader. Trump had tweeted for the women to go 'back to your country' even though only one of four had not been born in the US. Merkel has previously taken public jabs at the US president, most notably in a Harvard University commencement speech in May. In the talk, dubbed by German media such as Spiegel Online as her first explicitly 'Anti-Trump speech', German leader deplored attacks on free trade, "walls" of any kind and "lies (described) as truth." While Merkel had shared a visibly warm relationship with former US president Barack Obama, her contact with Trump has been formal and firm.
