Merino farmers find success in hard timesMIKE WATSON/FAIRFAX NZ Around 170 people attended the field day at Simon and Lynda Harvey's property Glen Orkney, Awatere Valley. Harvey, with wife Lynda and son Tom, recently won the inaugural Marlborough Sheep and Beef Farmer of the Year Award. A field day held at the Harveys' Glen Orkney, and Stronsay properties at the head of the Medway River attracted farmers, sheep and beef representatives and sponsors. SCOTT HAMMOND/FAIRFAX NZ Merino sheep at Glen Orkney in the Awatere ValleyThe Harveys bought Glen Orkney from Simon's father in 1984, and added the neighbouring Stronsay property four-and-a-half years ago. Lamb scanning percentages at 159 per cent were among the highest for merino farmers in the region.
