These are among 10 “myths” about mental illness discussed by the Canadian Mental Health Association, which identifies them all as untrue or serious over-simplifications. As many as 40 per cent of hospital inpatients may suffer from mental illness, most commonly from depression, substance abuse, stress and anxiety disorders. Global research suggests that about 25 per cent of us will suffer from mental illness at some point in our lives. We no longer see evil spirits in the utterances of those who have mental illness, or curses imposed by the jealous or vindictive.
