Citizens gather in Hyderabad on Wednesday to remember the role of the great tamarind tree that saved over 150 lives on this day in 1908 as the flood waters of River Musi rose menacingly. The tree is on the Osmania General Hospital campus. | Photo Credit: Nagara Gopalmore-inIn order to mark the floods in River Musi in 1908, and to pay homage to the lives lost, the Forum for Better Hyderabad (FBH) in collaboration with the Centre for Deccan Studies organised a memorial meet under the ‘Great Tamarind Tree’ that had saved 150 people at that time, here on Wednesday. Chairperson of the Musi River Front Development Corporation Prem Singh Rathore, who attended as the chief guest, vowed to ensure setting up of night bazaars, festivals, and parking slots on the river banks, as part of the restoration work. Deputy Mayor Fasiuddin and president of the Forum for Better Hyderabad M. Vedakumar were among those who attended the meeting which had participation from scholars, historians, NGOs, school children and others.
