As the story goes, Lansing had convinced Gibson to not only direct the movie but star. Gibson eventually agreed, and then met with the studio’s head of business affairs to secure a budget. 20th Century Fox had agreed to pay for two-thirds of the film, but Paramount wasn’t willing to pay the rest of what Gibson had demanded. As negotiations continued, Gibson became infuriated and “grabbed a large glass ashtray and threw it through the wall.”It made a hole in the wall and went through it! No word on whether or not Gibson replaced the ashtray.
