Twenty years later, on a recent evening, I met Paul again. As he grew professionally and became more well known in the island, he came in closer contact with Sri Lankan Tamil militants, something that couldn’t be avoided if one was in the public arena. Some six years later, he found himself battling charges of narcotics smuggling and under the Arms Act. He talked about all the changes in Rameswaram and how there is a need to promote sustainable fishing. As I took leave with promises of staying in touch, I reminded myself that Paul was only a source.
