The 57-year-old had taken charge of the Carthage Eagles in February 2025 for a second time, having previously resigned in 2013 after Tunisia were knocked out in the AFCON group stage. The team lost 1–0 to Cameroon, suffered a 3–2 defeat to Mozambique, and finally fell 3–2 to Côte d’Ivoire despite taking a 2-0 lead, marking one of their worst outings ever. In response to the poor performance, the government announced the dissolution of the entire technical staff and suspended the national team until further notice.
