With the 35th America’s Cup Presented by Louis Vuitton in full swing in the Challenger playoffs now, we take a few minutes to examine the oldest trophy in international sports. Affectionately called “Auld Mug,” the trophy is awarded to the winner of the America’s Cup races. The New York Yacht Club held the Cup until 1983 as it continued to win America’s Cup races in what some call the “longest winning streak in sports.” In 1983, the America’s Cup was won by Royal Perth Yacht Club. Louis Vuitton commissioned British Silversmith Thomas Lyte to create the stunning Challenger’s Cup trophy. Louis Vuitton also created a custom travel case for the trophy (similar to the trunk it created to carry the America’s Cup trophy).
